In July 2025, Bangladesh finds itself entangled in a web of political uncertainty. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, born from a popular uprising, now faces mounting criticism over its failure to deliver on promises-particularly the long-awaited July Declaration. Coupled with rising mob violence, the arrest of prominent economist Abul Barkat, the controversial role of Islamist factions, and the unprecedented move by a former police chief to become a state witness, the nation is asking: Is this truly a democratic transition-or a carefully orchestrated deception?
The Delayed July Declaration: A Promise Unfulfilled
The July uprising was a historic moment-an eruption of public will against authoritarianism. The Yunus-led interim government pledged to release a national charter within 30 working days. That deadline has long passed. Civil society groups and student leaders now accuse the administration of stalling, fearing the document will be diluted or politicized.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has threatened to publish its own version by August 3, reigniting tensions between grassroots movements and state institutions.
slamist Factions Reframe the Narrative
Hardline Islamist groups, including Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Jamaat-e-Islami, have seized the moment to rebrand the uprising as a religious awakening. Their 16-point charter calls for constitutional reform, proportional representation, and the repeal of “anti-national treaties.”
This ideological hijacking threatens the secular spirit of the July movement, raising concerns about the future of pluralism in Bangladesh.
Mob Violence and the Breakdown of Law
The brutal public lynching of businessman Sohag in Old Dhaka-captured on CCTV-has shocked the nation. Linked to youth leaders of a major political party, the incident underscores a disturbing trend: mob justice is becoming normalized, while law enforcement remains passive.
Simultaneously, the arrest of economist Abul Barkat, a vocal advocate for secular democracy, signals a crackdown on dissent. His detention is widely viewed as politically motivated.
A Police Chief Turns Witness: Cracks in the State
Former Inspector General of Police, Abdullah Al-Mamun, has become a state witness in a war crimes tribunal-an unprecedented move. His testimony could expose deep-rooted corruption and complicity within the state apparatus, but also raises questions about selective justice and political theater.
Election or Illusion?
With all these developments, the central question looms: Will Bangladesh hold a genuine election-or is this a scripted performance to legitimize a new power structure?

What Must Be Done

Ensure accountability for mob violence, regardless of political affiliation
Protect civil liberties, including freedom of speech and academic independence
Commit to a free and fair election, with international observers and constitutional safeguards

Bangladesh stands at a pivotal moment. The July uprising was not just a protest-it was a promise. A promise of justice, dignity, and democratic renewal. That promise is now under threat-from ideological capture, institutional inertia, and political opportunism.
If the people reclaim the spirit of July-through vigilance, unity, and courage-Bangladesh may yet chart a new course. But if silence prevails, the revolution will be remembered not for its triumph, but for its betrayal.
